Joining Casco Bay Roller Derby

Joining Casco Bay Roller Derby (CBRD) starts by submitting a formal letter of intent to the CBRD board at info@cascobayrollerderby.com.

This letter should include:

  • your intent regarding membership status (full member, support member, official, etc.),
  • a brief of your roller derby history,
  • and any additional information the league should know about you (desire to play competitively, challenges to meet attendance requirements, health conditions, etc.).

Before joining CBRD, prospective members must attend three CBRD practices and volunteer at a CBRD event prior to registration with MRDA. If you are already a member of another league or transferring from a league, we also ask that you provide a letter of good standing from your current or prior league’s Board of Directors or other ruling body.

Juniors: If you are transferring from a junior league, your league will need to provide a letter showing that you are in good standing. The letter must be endorsed by a non-relational member of the league’s board (or other governing body) and should include comments from coaches regarding areas for growth or improvement. Casco is eager to assist junior skaters in transitioning to adult derby, so any guidance from your junior coaches and mentors is helpful. If you are unable or unwilling to provide these references, please explain in your letter of intent.

Insurance

To join as a skater, you will need WFTDi insurance. The insurance cost is $80/year and must be maintained. This is tracked by the league, and if your insurance is not current, you will not be allowed to put on skates at any CBRD event or practice.

When you get the League Information, choose “I’m Joining a League.” Then, choose “Casco Bay Roller Derby” from the drop-down menu.

To complete the registration, you will need to confirm that you will abide by the MRDA’s code of conduct and non-compete. This agreement must be signed annually and is required to be part of any CBRD league communication.

After your registration is complete, one of our MRDA representatives will approve your membership.

Casco Bay Roller Derby Code of Conduct

As a member, you are required to acknowledge our league’s Code of Conduct on an annual basis. This document was drafted to explain the behavior expected of our members in accordance with our mission and vision. Violation of our CoC can result in expulsion from the league and events.

Safety Expectations

Casco Bay Roller Derby takes safety very seriously and will always act with a safety-first mindset. During practice, coaches and training staff are responsible for the safety of all present and may ask attendees not to participate in certain activities. Attendees are expected to comply with the coaching staff’s requests.

The Director of Training determines if a skater is eligible to participate in CBRD games based on the assessment and advice of the Training Committee.

Concussion Safety: Hitcheck

CBRD uses the app Hitcheck to assess for concussions. Skating members are expected to use the application to perform the baseline assessment. The application measures cognitive functions that can be impacted by head injuries. When impact occurs, a post-injury assessment will be performed. Deviations between the baseline and post-injury measurements indicate a possible head injury. The post-injury assessment is used by CBRD training to assess if a skater may return to practice.
